Customer Response
Ok, But
I own this shaver for over a year now. I already own an old Norelco (http://www.amazon.com/Norelco-Deluxe-Reflex-Plus-Shaver/dp/B00009RB11). I find myself using the old shaver instead of this model. I like to shave my head bald. This model leaves some hair. I have to use the 6863 xl model to finish the job. Then I feel my head very smooth, with almost no hair missed.
If you like to shave bald, I strongly recommend the 6863 XC model. But Don't leave it plugged in for too long. It will reduce the battery life.
Poor design
I have used Norelco shavers for many years and was happy with them. This design, however, is poorly developed. The three heads have small individual compartments for cut hair and must be cleaned out daily. It's clumsy to open them and the razor is nosier because the heads are above the casing. Also, the charging stand uses up counter space.
Great Shaver - Clunky Charger
The NORELCO Arcitec 1050 provides an excellent shave, cleans easily under running sink faucet. And I've always been impressed with Philips quality. However, traveling with the either of the two, provided, clunky chargers is problematic. The charger takes up a lot of room in my traveling gear. This is compared to my previous NORELCO Shaver with an internal charger. So, I travel with my old NORELCO and use the new Arcitec 1050 at home. Shaving with the Arcitec is comfortable, close and fast. Since I have Irish, red, naturally curly hair on both head and face the close AND comfortable shave is appreciated. Other shavers leave the hair too long and cause ingrown chin and neck hairs, or "Shave Bumps". I hope this will help your decision.
One star?!? Are you kidding me?
Oh, C'mon guys! There is no way this is a one or two star product. Is it perfect? Hardly, but it's worth at least four stars. I first heeded these negative warnings and went with another product (to remain unnamed) and was majorly disappointed. The shave was so bad, my co-workers thought I had the mange. So I reluctantly bought the 1050, figuring if Norelco's top of the line doesn't cut it, I'll just quite my job and join ZZ Top.
To clarify, my beard is category: WOLFMAN. I have coarse, wiry whiskers, and plenty of them... and they grow fast. Needless to say, I need an industrial strength razor. I've been using electric shavers for over 25 years, and while this one isn't the best I've owned, it is close. In fact, the more I get used to the design features, it may eventually take the top spot. The shave is quick, smooth and close, and the unique head design allows for some serious precision manscaping (if you're into that sort of thing!)
Complaints: Like most modern rechargeable razors, it's slightly underpowered compared to it's plug in ancestors. Also, the whisker chamber is too small. I have to empty it at least once during a shave. If I didn't wear a vandyke, I'd probably have to empty it twice.
Prognosis: A good razor, a good shave. I'm keeping my day job (much to the relief of ZZ Top fans everywhere).
Highly Recommended
I replaced a different manufacturer's very old electric razor with the Arcitec 1050, and have been using it for about three weeks. My primary shaving method has been the razor blade, supplemented by the electric for a fast shave now and then. I am so satisfied with the new Norelco that it has become my primary shaver. It delivers results virtually as close as a blade, and sometimes I think it is just as good. I don't feel that I need to use a blade to get a close shave any more, and I'm really amazed by the results. I didn't think that an electric could ever come this close to a blade. I guess that the technology has improved over the last twenty years, like everything else!
The shaver is not perfect, but the disadvantages are minor in my opinion. It does produce hair shavings, so I just shave over the sink. I don't mind cleaning up a little. The trimmer is quite small, but it does work well enough to clean the sideburns with an up and down motion. I have found that the shave is quite comfortable if you don't overdo it - just shave until you are clean, and use an after-shave cream to avoid minor irritation. I would prefer being able to leave the plug in the shaver, rather than remove it right after the charge is complete. It's a small inconvenience for such a great shave. And it is more economical than blades in the long run.
